The Summer Red Lip

I love a good bold lip but in the summer I find it hard to find a perfect shade that isn't too dark or neon, which doesn't really suit my complexion. As you probably know if you have been a longtime reader of my blog that I love the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils and have quite a few but there was one shade in particular that I've had my eye on for awhile and it turns out that it makes for the perfect summer red lip. The lippie in question is Dragon Girl, which is a bright raspberry red. I had heard a lot about this shade from one of my favorite fellow bloggers, Celina, and once the summer weather hit I felt the urge to finally bite the bullet and purchase this lipstick.

The color, for starters, is absolutely incredible, while it still is a very true red, the bright pink undertones help it look a lot more fresh and daytime appropriate. On camera this the color showed up a lot more neon and pink but I think that was due to the fact that I was standing right next to my window and I was working with some pretty intense daylight.

I also think that the formula of this lip product is perfect for the warmer months. I really don't like wearing glossy lips because 1. I think they look a little bit too "done" and glam for daytime and 2. You have to continuously be checking your makeup and touching them up. Although the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils are incredibly matte I don't find them to be uncomfortable, drying or heavy-feeling on the lips like some uber-matte lip products can (ahem The Hourglass Opaque Rouges). That being said you will want to make sure that your lips are in pretty good condition because the product will cling a bit to dry patches on the lips.

What is your favorite lipstick for summer?
