A Makeup Guide for Gingers: Eyes

This week on Everyday Ginger there will be a series of posts about makeup for all of you gingers out there! Being a ginger myself, I know how it is sometimes hard to find colors that work with your complexion, eye color, and hair color. And of course take this all with a grain of salt, you can wear these colors if you aren't a ginger and don't feel confined to these colors if you are a ginger!

So for the first part in this series I thought I'd start with eyeshadow. Here's a breakdown of my top 5 favorite eye products for gingers.

Urban Decay Naked Palette

Honestly if I could pick one palette for anyone to own I would pick the original Urban Decay Naked palette. I think that this palette works especially well for gingers because it has a lot of gold and bronze tones, which compliment light complexions and light eyes perfectly. It's difficult to find a balance because often a lot of these golden/bronze colors look great on gingers, but more often than not they come off incredibly orange, because of the fair skin tone, however all of the eyeshadows, even the most golden eyeshadow, Half-Baked, in this palette don't look at all orangey.

NARS Alhambra Duo

I think that redheads look absolutely amazing with very minimal makeup (watch this video to see what I mean) and this duo is perfect to create this look. The combination of the pink-ish champagne and the light gold colors just make for the best, most flattering basic eye look.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze

Not only do I love this cream shadow to wear on its own, but for all of you redheads/far-skinned people that struggle with wearing gold eyeshadows (I'm looking at you MAC Woodwinked) because they look orange/brassy on you, fear not because this is literally the best base for gold eyeshadows! The slightly taupe undertone helps to cancel some of the orange undertones in gold eyeshadows, while still letting some of the gold show through.

MAC Sumptuous Olive Eyeshadow

Whether its clothing or eyeshadow, I think that one of the best colors on gingers is green, simply because it is the complimentary color to orange on the color wheel, which makes your red hair stand out even more. Sumptuous Olive is an easy "color" to wear because it has some bronze undertones, making it a perfect mix of both a neutral and a color eyeshadow.

MAC Sketch Eyeshadow

Another color that I think looks great on gingers is plum, and MAC Sketch is the best plum eyeshadow I have come across. The reddish-purple color looks great on blue, green, or brown eyes and compliments fair skin beautifully. I personally like to use this as a powder eyeliner sometimes, because it isn't as harsh as black and is a bit more unexpected than brown.

What are your favorite eyeshadows that compliment you hair/skin/eye color?

  1. I love this idea!! I'm a fellow ginge so I know just how hard it is to get it right sometimes. I steer away from gold eyeshadow at all costs.. it just doesn't work! x
